A little confusing: You need to bid a maximum that you're willing to pay, but the current bid price doesn't automatically go to your max bid. The bidding only goes up in increments of $1. If no one's bid on an item yet, then your high (winning) bid will automatically be $1, and will remain the winning bid till someone else bids higher.
So if you do a max bid of $10, and you obtain the high bid of $1, and then someone else does a max bid of $7, then you will end up with the high bid of $8. And so on.
